I got a 'Report to Member' from the health insurance company in the mailbox today. I was just going out to get another immunization shot (the third time out of the five required), and an envelope from the insurance company always scares me a little... and think it might be a bill - but I also know it is not ;)
It is a report to show what the charge was, how much was paid by the insurance, and how much I owe the clinic. This seems to be sent because I go to the university health services (on-campus clinic) cash free (or just with copayment), the clinic bills the insurance, and the insurance company shows how the billing went.
According to the report, for the Hepatitis A & B immunization, the actual vaccine was $90, and the administrative fee was $15, so the total was $105. And that was all paid by the insurance! Actually, this is only the first of the three dozes, and if I pay out of pocket three times, that is $415 total...
I am soooo glad I have the health insurance.

ケイタイ
お下がりだった前の携帯、雑音が多いのが気になっていたのが、とうとうご臨終らしく、私の話す声が全然届かなくなってしまった・・・ので新しいのをebayで購入して、今日届きました (^-^)/
バッテリーが新しいほうがいいと聞いたので新品にこだわって、探したなかで、値段がそんなに高くなくて、音質がしっかりしていて、できればかわいいもの・・・そんな期待を込めて選んだのはピンク色のMotorola SLVR L6。わずか1.09センチの薄さが売りのかっこいい機種です。同じシリーズのL7のほうは音楽プレーヤーが付いていてカメラの解像度もいいらしいですが、私には必要ないのでちょうどよさそうです。（写真はレビューを参考にさせてもらったcnet.comに借りています）
カメラがついていて、携帯で撮った写真をパソコンに取り込めるらしいので、これからいろいろなところへ出かけて、カシャカシャと写真撮ってきたらブログにも載せられる :)

ハワイで歯医者さん
今朝、ハワイで初めて歯医者さんに行きました。
ちょっとまえに詰め物が取れて気になっていたのですが、痛みもなかったので（前に治療したときに神経を取ってしまった歯だったらしい）、「一時帰国中に治せばいいや」と思ってほおっておいたのですが、よく考えてみたら、ハワイで歯科保険を持ってるんだし、日本では無保険なんだし、せっかくの短期一時帰国中に家族や友人と過ごす時間を削って歯医者に何度も通うのはおもしろくないし、というので友達のかかりつけの歯医者さんを紹介してもらいました。
日本の歯医者さんのほうが腕が確か、と聞いたことがある気もしたけれど、前に日本で通院していた歯科医院はアメリカでトレーニングを受けた歯科医さんたちが診療していたところで、先進の技術、とか言ってたのを思い出すと、一概にどっちが上とも言えない気がして。。。それにあの歯医者さんはけっこう頼れる歯医者さんだったのです。
なにせ４年ぶりなので、４年前に虫歯はないよ、と診断されていてもドキドキ。いつ行っても歯医者さんにはブラッシングが下手だよと言われる私・・・昨夜と今朝はうんと丁寧に歯を磨きました。
その歯医者さんはアラモアナ近くの医療関係のオフィスがいっぱい入ったビルの一室で、歯医者さん、助手さん、受付さん、みんな英語と韓国語のバイリンガルでした。韓国から旅行中だったり韓国出身で地元に住んでいたりする患者さんには韓国語で対応しているようですが、英語だけでも問題なしです :) 先一週間は予約が詰まっている上に急患の電話が入って、けっこう忙しそうでした。
日本の歯医者さんと一番違うと思ったのは、一度に診る患者さんが１人だけ（座って待っている人がいない）でじっくり時間をかけて診てくれること。日本では（もちろん例外はあって私が日本で最後に通っていたところはアメリカ式だったけれど）たいてい１５分か２０分の枠で、根の治療なんていうと１ヶ月近く通い詰めだったけれど、ここでは１時間くらいの枠で一人だけ診ているので、虫歯１本の治療は１回で終わっちゃうようです。私の場合、次回、詰め物の取れた歯の治療をして、ついでに、今日発見された小さな虫歯も治療するそうです。
もっともっと違うかと思ったけれど、機械なども見たところ同じ感じだし、ぜんぜん違和感なしです。他の人のホームページには、アメリカの歯医者さんには椅子の横にある、口をゆすぐコップがないと書かれていたりしたけれど、ちゃんとあったし、使いました。
今日発見されたのは小さな虫歯と、もうひとつ、親知らずが一本生えてきたのが虫歯になっていて抜いたほうがいいと言われました。これも１回で終わるそうです。親知らずは実はまだ１本目で、ちょっと不安ですが、友達もこの歯医者さんに親知らずを抜いてもらったそうなので、大丈夫でしょう。。。

Architecture Day
It was a Saturday for the monthly outing with the kids in the mentoring program. Today's theme was architecture, and it started with a guided tour of architectures in downtown Honolulu by an architect who is a Rotarian. One of the objectives of this mentoring program was to expose the kids to many occupations, and I think it was really neat to have working professionals introduce their work. It was even interesting for adults like me.Many buildings in downtown are nice and feels historical, but had no knowledge about it, so it was interesting. The first photo is the building which was the highest building in Honolulu until 1911, and the first to have an elevator.
This one is more 'modern' style, not much decoration. I don't have a picture here, but we also saw a 'postmodern' building. It was covered with glass walls, and looked very nice :)
Then, we visited an architect firm and the kids got to try 'Google SketchUp.' It is a freeware that let you design a 3-D unit like this one. It's fascinating that you can make a house of your own this easily, and you can place it in Google Earth. I really want to try and make the nicest house, but I can see it would take a lot of time... Maybe, when I have lots of time.

Farmer's Market
I am back in Honolulu again, and I went to the weekly Farmer's Market this morning. This is the best source of vegetables & fruit supply for me, and I have visited numerous times over the last four years.
The vegetables there are fresh in general and even fresher in the morning! They are also normally cheaper than those in grocery stores (supermarkets) - I know that China Town is even cheaper, but is a bit far. The market opens up on campus once a week, and then that becomes the closest store I can buy vegetables.
Today I bought a half-cut pumpkin, a bag of broccoli, a bag of 2 cucumbers, a bag of lettuce, a bag of 3 tomatoes, a bag of mini tomatoes, green onions, a bag of 3 carrots, 4 apples, a bag of soy bean sprout, and a bag of small apple bananas. A bag of lychee tempted me - seasonal items are always attractive, but I didn't buy. All the supply of my vegetables for a week in less than $17!
I hope there is Farmer's Market like this in Massachusetts as well :-)

外国は危険！？
髪の毛を切ってきた。すっきりして気持ちがいい。どんなスタイルにしましょうかと聞かれて、うまく説明できなかったのだけど、手元にファッション誌があって、「この表紙のお姉さんみたいなのもいいと思うんだけれどどうかしら？」、と言ったら、「そんな感じにこの辺を短くしてこの辺はそのままでという風にしましょうか」ということになった。いい感じになったので表紙のモデルさんに感謝 ;-)
美容師さんは若い女性。初めてだったのでいろいろな話をして、留学中と言ったら、彼女は国外に出たことがないと分かった。世界中に友達ができて楽しいですよ、と話したら、そうですよね、と言いながら、「なんか怖くないですか、だまされたりとか」と言う。「だまされたり」って何だろうと思ったら、拉致とかそういうことらしい。確かに、ヨーロッパ留学中の日本人を拉致した容疑の2人に逮捕状が出たりして、毎日ニュースを騒がせているから、そういうのを毎日見たり聞いたりしていると、日本の外へ出ると怖い、という感覚が生まれるのかもしれない。
私の視点が偏っているのも確実だけど、今は国境を越えていろいろな国の人がいろいろなところで活躍しているので、外国は危険、というのはちょっと驚いた。治安が悪いところはもちろん避けたほうがいいけれど、日本にいても、安全だと安心していたら、そのほうが危険だったりするんじゃないのかしら？私のプログラムにもヨーロッパ出身でアメリカで教授をしている先生がいたし、高校で非常勤講師をしたときはESLプログラムの先生も中国出身だったし、日本国内で海外出身の人が起こした企業にも関わった。もちろん、国境を越えることで起こる不便はあるし、パスポートが日本である限り、日本の外では書類上常にお客様(Visitor)扱いだけれど、仕事の上では、私も日本人というよりは世界人という感覚が強くなってきた。日本で生まれ育ったことには意味があるし、そんな自分だからできることをしたいけれど、自分に与えられた力が出せるならば、日本にいることにはこだわらない、という感じ。
どっちが普通なのか、よいのかは決められないけれど、私も変わったんだよね、きっと。

Smokers Alert
Maybe I've lived in Hawaii too long. There's one thing that really bothers me here in Japan... and that is smoking.
In the state of Hawaii, smoking in restaurants has been banned. It hasn't been that long, but even before that there were many places that made a seperate smoking area, so I got used to not smelling smoke at restaurants and cafes.
A few days ago at a "Lotteria" I went for a cup of coffee with my friends I realized it was very smokey. Hmmm? It was something I wasn't used to. I was surprised that smokers and non-smokers are sitting side by side. Then at a restaurant I went with my grandma, I found an ash tray on every table, and I realized this was normal. Finally I went to a fast food restaurant yesterday for a bite of late lunch, and literally, everyone except me was smoking there! Mmmm. Not good.
These worry me a bit; they remind me of my friends in Hawaii. Two classmates - young males - are from the US and have studied/taught in Japan. They said they had learned to smoke in Japan, and smoking was a strategy for learning Japanese. Many young people in Japan smoke, and if they smoke as well, they can easily hang out with young Japanese people. Even in Hawaii, more students from Japan are smokers than local American students.
I don't mean to blame smokers. They are adults and they make choices on their own. BUT they have to know that it has risk for their health. It is addictive and is a main cause of lung cancer. I feel that there is less awareness raising in Japan that smoking is harmful. I think that it is really a shame that Japan is becomoing an exporter of this lack of awareness. みんな、もっと自分の身体、大切にしようよ！

日光へ遠足
ハワイで寮に一緒に住んでいた友人が短く来日する用があり、私も一時帰国中で、お互いに予定のない日が一日あったので、彼女の友人も含めて、一緒に日光に行ってきた。香港に住む彼女と私が日本で会えるのは予想外のラッキー。ハワイでは月に1回は中華街に出かける飲茶仲間だったので、いつか香港に訪ねて飲茶三昧をしたいと思っていたのだけれど、まずは日本での再会になりました :)
首都圏に10年近く住んでいたわりに、北関東はあまり行っていなくて、日光は初めてだったりする。その日光東照宮はとってもきらびやか、日本のほかの観光地とは全然違って、おもしろかった。金や赤を中心に鮮やかな色をうんと使うのが、中国や韓国のお寺みたいで、大陸的。とはいっても、屋根は黒の瓦で紋付きだったりして、日本であることは間違いない。京都のわびさびの世界と違って日本らしくない、と言ったら、わびさびは室町時代に生み出されたのだから、それ以前の日本はこうだったのかもよ～と指摘される。そっか～、そうかも。東照宮って誰かのお住まいだったのかと思ったら家康公が祀られているんだって、誰も住まないのにはもったいないような場所だわ。
きらびやかな東照宮を見に行ったとはいえ、鬼怒川や竹林などの自然に目が行ってしまう。苔むした石の灯篭のほうが私にはキレイ！だと思えるんだけどね。200段の階段を上り降りしてしっかり歩いたので、疲れたけれど楽しかったです。

"Sabuten"
There was one word I had no idea it was on my dad's blog a few weeks ago. It's a record called "Sabuten" in his ultra-marathon. There even was a comment that "Sabuten" is a great accomplishment. "Sabuten"??? Sounds like "Saboten" ('cactus' in Japanese), but I can tell it obviously isn't!
After I came back, when he talked about the race, he told me he broke the record of 10 hours in 10 km race. "Sabuten" was "Sub-Ten." And it seems to be a technical, yet common term among the runners. "Sub" is used to mean "below" here - like a "subway" running below the roads, or a "submarine" goes under water. But somehow this just didn't feel right to me. There're many "sub-" words that just aren't about "below." "Substandard" is lower than standard, and "suburban" is outside of urban areas, and the "subs" at school is substitute teachers; somehow, "sub-s" feel "subordinate" and "subjunctive," like assisting or reaching a higher level, and didn't feel quite right as the name for a glorious record of going below 10 hours.
Then I came up with a hypothesis, maybe this was a Japanese-invented English. So I tried googling in Japanese "Sabuten" and there were numerous entries, but when I tried googling in English "Sub Ten" the entries in the meaning of "Below ten" was not many. The first entry was about a record, but "below ten seconds" in a much shorter run. Maybe???
I also wanted to see if I can find support for my perceived undesirable connotation. So I went to the Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary and looked up "sub-." There were four entries, and and they were 1. "below" like in 'sub-zero temperatures,' 2. "under, below, from below, lower in rank" as in 'subtropical', 'subnormal', and 'subterranean,' 3. "not equal" as in 'a sublieutenant' and 'a subordinate,' and 4. "smaller" as in ' a subcontinent,' 'a subcommittee meeting' and 'to subdivide.' So I guess "Sub Ten" is the first usage, but the usages 2 and 3 are the ones that came to me.

飛行機寝ない作戦
久しぶりにノースウェスト航空に乗った。値段が安かったのと、マイルをためようと思ったのとで、航空会社のホームページからマイルのカードもしっかり使ってオンラインで購入。インターネット上で、リコンファームができたり、24時間前からチェックイン(搭乗券も自分で印刷)できたり、機能が増えていて感心。ただ、家で搭乗券を発券したのに、荷物を預けるために結局は同じラインに並ばなくちゃいけなかったのはちょっとイマイチ。確かに、これで航空会社の人件費は減らせるよね。カウンターや電話応対のの職員数が少なくてすむもの。
「西へ飛ぶ昼便は寝ちゃいけない」というのを実行することにして、飲み物もカフェイン入りのダイエットペプシ、食事と一緒にコーヒーもいただいてみた。普段は、乗り物酔いを恐れて、水しか飲まずに食事も軽くとってとにかく寝る作戦だったので、今回はまったく反対。映画も2本ともしっかり見ました。
1つ目の映画はMiss Potter。Peter Rabbitなどの絵本作者＆画家ベアトリックス・ポターの駆け出しのころのお話し。場面はロンドンと湖水地方で、特に湖水地方の牧歌的な風景がきれいなんだ。32歳独身というのもあってちょっと他人事じゃなくて、しっかり感情移入してみました。まだご覧になっていない方はこちらを参考にどうぞ。
2つ目は児童小説が原作のCharlotte's Web。アメリカではみんな小学校のときに読んでいるような有名なお話し。主人公の豚Wilburちゃんのほかにも動物たちがいっしょうけんめい考えたりするのがすごくかわいい。この前、Scattegoryというゲームをしたときに、Sで始まるBarn Animal（納屋で飼育する動物）にSpiderと答えてしまった友達の気持ちがやっと分かった。というか、日本の街中で育った私にはBarn Animalって何？という感じだったんだけど、これでちゃんとBarn Animalのリストが頭の中に描けるようになりました(＾_＾)
そして寝ない作戦の結末は、乗り物酔いもなく、たいした時差ぼけもなく（ついた日の次の朝はちょっと早く目が覚めたくらい）すみました。帰りは夜便で東向きなので、初めから最後まで寝るべし、なのですが、また次に西へ飛ぶときにはやってみるべし、かも！？

1つ目の映画はMiss Potter。Peter Rabbitなどの絵本作者＆画家ベアトリックス・ポターの駆け出しのころのお話し。場面はロンドンと湖水地方で、特に湖水地方の牧歌的な風景がきれいなんだ。32歳独身というのもあってちょっと他人事じゃなくて、しっかり感情移入してみました。まだご覧になっていない方はこちらを参考にどうぞ。
2つ目は児童小説が原作のCharlotte's Web。アメリカではみんな小学校のときに読んでいるような有名なお話し。主人公の豚Wilburちゃんのほかにも動物たちがいっしょうけんめい考えたりするのがすごくかわいい。この前、Scattegoryというゲームをしたときに、Sで始まるBarn Animal（納屋で飼育する動物）にSpiderと答えてしまった友達の気持ちがやっと分かった。というか、日本の街中で育った私にはBarn Animalって何？という感じだったんだけど、これでちゃんとBarn Animalのリストが頭の中に描けるようになりました(＾_＾)
そして寝ない作戦の結末は、乗り物酔いもなく、たいした時差ぼけもなく（ついた日の次の朝はちょっと早く目が覚めたくらい）すみました。帰りは夜便で東向きなので、初めから最後まで寝るべし、なのですが、また次に西へ飛ぶときにはやってみるべし、かも！？
